trouble in Outlook Express (part 2)
I know this one will only be a very old tales because the first post was already past for more than one month..
but, maybe some of you didn’t notice yet that this problems is a very common on Outlook Express. It may occurs at any time, maybe when you are in a very needs for your e-mails and it’s not the new mail that you will receive, but it’s the old one in your inbox. Maybe you will need to read my previous post on this topic.
This kind of problem is not only occurs when you accidentally erased your–or someone else–mail (or the dbx database) like I did last month. Because the symptoms has already appears before i deleted the mails and the dbx.
For you who still using Outlook Express (for the reason of fast and light application, or any other reasons you have), please check you inbox periodically and keep it under 2000 mails or if you want to make another advance step follow this lead
Tools >> Options >> Maintenance (tab) >> Store Folder
copy the folder in the window that appears and then go to “run” and paste it to the field inside the run window. After clicking the “OK” button or pressing “Enter/return key” you will see the folder where all the dbxs files are stored. Here, you should check and make sure that the inbox.dbx file size is under 2 GB. The default store folder will be like this in the default state (in Windows XP SP-2),
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{7F8DD003-0A8C-47F0-8462-8D24E83968F4}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
To maintain the dbxs files stay on the good form without any corrupt, always make sure that the inbox (it’s better to have any other folder such as “Outbox”, “Sent Items”, etc. or the other folders that you already made) only fills under 2000 mails or the dbx’s size under 2 GB. but it is better if you always “compact” those folders periodically (at least once a month). To do this u can compact the folders one by one or compact them in one time.
Keep in mind, when you are compacting your folder you have to work offline and it’s better not to do any other jobs on your computer. The very best way to do this is by these steps,
- Work offline (File >> Work Offline)
- Choose the top folder on your folder view (Outlook Express) and minimize all the folder (clicking the “+” or “-” sign”)
- Close all other windows (Folders and contacts) and leave only the main window.
- Compact all folders (File >> Folder >> Compact All folders)
- don’t do anything until the compacting finished.
Sometimes it’ll stoped during the process and said that the Outlook Express or other application accessing the Inbox (or something else). so, please take another steps,
- Work offline (this is just to make sure the inbox will not accessed by the new mails)
- Make a new folder (right click on ‘local folders’ >> New Folder)
- Move all the mails on the Inbox to that new folder.
- Close Outlook Express
- Delete Inbox.dbx in the store folder
- Run Outlook Express again and move back the mails
- Delete the new folder and it’s dbx
Thats is for maintenance the folders in Outlook Express.
How to get the mails back if the problems look like mine list month?
Searching and asking to my uncle Google, finally I found this tiny application that could save my position in this office.. as long as you didn’t delete the dbx file (it is better to backup all the dbx files before compacting or try fix anything when you have any problems with Outlook Express, or don’t move it from recycle bin), you can still get your mails back with this free and small application.
You only need to browse the path to the folder you placed your corrupt dbx, check the files you want to extract, browse to the folder you want the output be, and then just click “Extract”, the other on the “Action” region is your choice. the output from this will be mails file (.eml). but the action can as long as 1 minute or even 3 days depend on the size of your dbx file. heheh..
hmmm…. well.. if you dealing with this kind of problems… just try it, and you know how powerful this free tiny application can be.
You may download the application here.
